About the Project
Our Mission
We believe that knowledge, culture, and community should be freely accessible. That's why we created this project: a non-profit platform dedicated to preserving and sharing the rich musical heritage of Crete.
Our mission is to document musicians, songs, releases, dances, and stories, to connect scattered sources, and to keep intergenerational knowledge alive and accessible for everyone.
Who We Are
This project is led by Antonios Schinarakis, who is deeply committed to preserving musical heritage, expanding access to cultural education, and capturing the stories and musical traditions of Crete.
We work voluntarily, driven by passion, expertise, and a vision to create something meaningful and lasting – something that can help others truly connect with this heritage.
What We Do
- Build a comprehensive database of songs, musicians, releases, dances, and cultural stories
- Provide audio samples and source material
- Offer multilingual access (currently Greek and English)
- Help users navigate the complexity of Cretan music, where many songs exist under different names and lyrics
Our work is guided by principles of openness, transparency, and digital sustainability. The source code is open source, and we adhere to high ethical standards in data collection and presentation.
Why We Do This
In a time when oral traditions are fading and valuable information risks being lost or commercialized, we aim to create a digital space that preserves, respects, and shares cultural knowledge – ad-free, non-commercial, and focused on the common good.
This project is not only dedicated to the musicians of Crete, but also to the Greek youth and children around the world who may not access these scattered stories and traditions due to language barriers or lack of resources.
Our goal is to ensure that anyone - Greek or not – can explore, understand, and experience the cultural richness of Crete, especially now, as the last bearers of this oral heritage are slowly disappearing.
Support Us
As an independent, non-profit initiative, we rely on support – through collaborations, volunteering or simply sharing your stories. Every contribution helps us grow and keep this project open and accessible to all.
